Healthy Mouth Healthy Woman: Should You Visit Your Manhattan Periodontist?

There are many times throughout a woman’s life when hormonal changes can impact her body and general health. But, did you know that sometimes these changes can also have an impact on oral health? It’s true. Through many changes relating to maturity, such as puberty or menopause, or during menstruation and pregnancy, the oral health needs of a woman’s gums change as well.

During different stages throughout a woman’s life, extra steps may need to be taken to protect your oral health:

Puberty– During puberty, progesterone and estrogen cause an increased blood flow to the gums, and may cause irritability and swelling of the gums.

Menstruation– Menstruation gingivitis is something that happens to many women. You may experience red, swollen, or bleeding gums right before menstruation, which usually clears up once menstruation has begun.

Pregnancy– It’s well known that the risk of gum disease significantly increases during pregnancy. In some cases, pregnancy gingivitis may lead to large lumps, called pregnancy tumors. While not cancerous, if the tumor doesn’t go away on its own, it may need to be removed by your periodontist in Manhattan. Gum disease during pregnancy has also been linked to premature birth and low birth-weight of the baby.

Menopause– during and after menopause, women may notice irritants in their mouth such as dry mouth, a burning in the mouth, and sensitivity to hot, cold, salty, or spicy foods. If gums are dry and shiny, or if they bleed easily, you may have menopausal gingivitis.

During these marked changes, great oral hygiene at home and regular visits with the dentist are of extreme importance. If you experience any of the following, it’s best to make an appointment with a periodontist in the Manhattan area right away:

  • Swollen or bleeding gums
  • Receding gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Loose or separating teeth
