Achieving Ideal Dental Health Through Sedation Dentistry Part 3: Sedation Dentistry FAQs

Should I opt for oral or IV conscious sedation?

Each patient has a set of needs as distinctive as their own fingerprint.  At Manhattan Periodontal Associates, we offer both oral and IV sedation, so all of our patients can benefit from treatment uniquely suited to them.  Please schedule a consultation appointment so we may discuss your treatment needs and help you determine which option is best for you.

Will my insurance pay for sedation?

In short, plans vary but many do cover a portion of the fee for IV sedation.  We are happy to give you an estimate for your out-of-pocket portion prior to treatment.  Oral sedatives are dispensed at the pharmacy of your choosing, please refer to your prescription plan for applicable co-pays.

Is IV sedation safe?

Yes!  Patients who undergo IV sedation are first screened to ensure optimal candidacy for receiving the IV medications.   We take time to educate you prior to your procedure regarding what to expect before and after IV sedation, so you can be fully confident in your personal safety.  Throughout the procedure, we monitor blood pressure, hearth rhythyms, and oxygen saturation levels in the blood.   Dr. Toscano is certified by the state of New York to perform oral and IV conscious sedation and also certified in both CPR and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).  Rest assured, your safety is our top priority!

What will I feel?

In a word, wonderful!  If your typical dental experience is wracked with unease and anxiety, then having your treatment completed using oral or IV sedation will change your opinion of the dental office for good!  Patients who are prescribed oral sedatives prior to their appoinment are awake and aware during prodedures, but experience relief from the weight of fear, tension and anxiety they may have had otherwise.  Patients sedated via IV are also calm and comfortable during treatment, and generally remember nothing or very little of their procedure.
