Periodontal Disease: More Prevalent Than Previously Thought

According to a recent study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “the prevalence of periodontal disease in the United States may be significantly higher than originally estimated… [and] may have been underestimated by as much as 50 percent.”

Sobering news to the team here at Manhattan Periodontal Associates! You may recall a previous blog post in which we discussed the relation between oral health and systemic health. The truth is, studies show that gum disease can be linked to other chronic inflammatory diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. Also, periodontal disease is a major contributing factor to tooth loss, and the last thing we want is for patients of this Manhattan Periodontist to suffer from tooth loss!

The early stages of this disease can be easy to overlook or dismiss as being of little importance. However, doing so can be detrimental not only to the longevity of your smile, but your overall health and well-being also! Knowing that periodontal disease is more wide spread among American adults than previously suspected, we strongly suggest a comprehensive periodontal evaluation at least once per year. A highly-trained, experienced Periodontist in Manhattan such as Dr. Nicholas Toscano is the best source for such an evaluation.
