Understanding the Dental Implant Process

In recent years, restoration with Dental Implants has become one of the most successful options in dentistry. Thanks to advancements like 3-D imaging studies, implant placement has never had more consistently reliable results!

In order to ensure the best possible results for your dental implant, understanding the implant process and the importance of every unique step is vital. As a highly-trained implant dentist in Manhattan, Dr.  Toscano take the time to educate their valued patients.

  • Consultation, detailed examination, and 3-D Imaging Study. Using this imaging study, our doctors are able to precisely measure the depth, width, and height of available jawbone, determining the best possible size of implant to produce an optimal result. We want to make sure we have “all our ducks in a row” so-to-speak, before treatment takes place!
  • If necessary, tooth extraction and bone augmentation. These procedures are most often performed by your implant dentist in Manhattan in advance of implant placement. It is important to provide the best possible foundation to ensure the success of the dental implant. When bone augmentation, or a bone graft is needed, a wait of several months may be recommended to allow the bone graft to heal properly before implant surgery.
  • Implant placement surgery. After meticulously preparing, surgical implantation of a titanium post can take place. This procedure is performed with our patient’s utmost comfort in mind! A healing abutment is attached to the implant, and if necessary, a temporary appliance to give the appearance of a tooth can be fitted.
  • Healing check. Three months or more after the implant is placed, you will return to our office so we can check how your own jawbone has integrated into the implant. This is a crucial part of the process, since we need to ensure that the implant will be able to support the pressure of chewing.
  • Placement of abutment and implant restoration. Whether your implant(s) are meant to support a single crown, bridge, or denture, this is the most exciting part of the process. Though restoration of the implant may take more than one appointment, once again, this is to ensure the best possible result. After you crown, bridge or denture is placed, you can again smile, speak, and chew with confidence!

By paying attention to detail, and never rushing things, your implant dentist at Manhattan Periodontal Associates can help you achieve a restoration that is indistinguishable from your natural teeth! Though some cases may qualify for an “immediate” dental implant, we find that results are most reliable when we take the time to meticulously prepare, and encourage our patients to never compromise results in favor of unrealistic speed of completion.
